Rotating Meeting Venue

One of the issues that we have had with our meetings at John Harvard's has been the difficulty for people from the western side of the Squirrel Hill tunnels to get there, especially now with the Parkway construction. In order to address that issue, we are starting a rotating meeting venue. Beginning with our September meeting, which will be held at the Carnegie Science Center (and quarterly thereafter), we will move the venue around the area to try to accommodate/inconvenience all of our members relatively more equally.

Other than the Carnegie Science Center, we are not firmly committed to any particular venue or geographic area. We do have tentative plans to use the Quaker meeting house in Oakland, John Harvard's, and something in the South Hills area. If anyone has any suggestions, please let us know.

For July's monthly meeting, since we have been bumped from our room at John Harvard's, we are going to try something different. This month we will be meeting at the Quaker meeting House on Ellsworth in Oakland. Since this is not a restaurant, we are going to try a sort of "pot luck" event. Please bring something that you feel like bringing - finger food, snacks, some dish that travels well something to show off your culinary talents, whatever you please. And if just is not feasible to bring a dish or snack, just bring yourself.

Our program will still be the same - watching the video of Bill Moyer's interview with Susan Jacoby and discussion afterward.

This year, for our annual picnic, we have decided to take advantage
of one of the better recreational opportunities that we have here in
western Pennsylvania. We have organized a canoeing expedition on the
mighty Youghiogheny. This leisurely trip begins with us meeting at the
outfitter's place in West Newton around 9:30 to get all of the
paperwork and things handled. We will then be taken by the outfitter's
van some miles upstream to the put-in where we will set off on our
downriver trip back to West Newton. Along the way, those who may be
interested can meet for lunch at the boat dock in Cedar Creek Park.
Anybody else who prefers to ride bicycles could travel along the
river's bike trail and meet there as well as those who would just like
to meet for a picnic lunch. Thanks to the modern wonder of cell phones,
we can keep in touch and co-ordinate everything to come off without a
hitch. Yeah, right! Anybody wanting more information or wanting to
reserve a canoe (they are first come first served) contact Chuck or
BillK.

New Discussion Group

CFIC-Pgh announces the formation of two discussion groups that will meet monthly at the Quaker Meeting House in Oakland. The address is 4836 Ellsworth Avenue. This is conveniently located to both the Pitt and CMU campuses, and is fairly centrally located for everyone that lives outside the city.

The first discussion group will meet on the first Tuesday of the month. The format of this group initially will be a moderated open discussion of various subjects/topics of interest to humanists. We may adopt a more structured format at some later date if that seems to be more viable. The moderator will be determined on an ad hoc basis.

The second discussion group will meet on the third Tuesday of each month at the same location. This will be a structured, ongoing discussion/study course with the initial offering to consist of 12 segments. The course of study is called "The Historical Jesus" and will be led by Victor Bernard.

For more information, contact Bill Kaszycki at unkabeard@verizon.net.

Food Drive

At December's meeting at John Harvard's, our Community conducted a very successful food drive to benefit the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. This worthy organization has been recognized several times for its efficient management by returning over 94% of its donations back to the region. For our drive, we collected 22 bags of non-perishable items along with $10.00 in cash. The food bank was very appreciative of our effort.

It should be noted that the period between New Year's and spring is one of the most difficult times for them when need is very high and donations taper off after the holidays. Anyone who thinks that we should conduct another drive in February, please let us know that you would be interested in participating.

Special mention needs to be made of Victor's contribution which far exceeded what would normally be expected. Thank you, Victor, for helping to put the "human" in humanism.
